Abstract

Academic performance is an important indicator of students’ success at school and maybe influenced by several factors, including sleep quantity and sleep hygiene.  Insufficient sleep duration and poor sleep hygiene may reduce student’s concentration, impair memory and negatively affect cognitive function, which may ultimately impact academic achievement. This study aimed to assess the association between sleep hygiene, sleep quantity and academic performance among high school students. An analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design was conducted among 151 tenth-grade students of SMAN 78 Jakarta, selected through random sampling in February 2024. Sleep hygiene was assessed using the Sleep Hygiene Index (SHI), while academic performance was measured using the Achievement Index (IP) scores from the mid-semester report of the 2023/2024 academic year. Sleep duration was obtained through student’s self-reports. Data were analyzed using the Chi-square test with a 95% confidence level (p<0.05). The results showed that 65.6% of students had moderate sleep hygiene, while 73.5% experienced poor sleep quantity. More than half of the students (51.7%) demonstrated adequate academic performance. Statistical analysis revealed significant associations between sleep hygiene and academic performace (p=0.003), as well as between sleep quantity and academic performance (p=0.000). In conclusion, sleep hygiene and sleep quantity were significantly associated with academic performace among students of SMAN 78 Jakarta.
